Stereo panning can move a sound from left to right without making it feel as though the source approaches and passes the listener. First establish the listening viewpoint. A roadside observer, a camera travelling beside a vehicle and a passenger inside it do not have the same relative motion. Add pass-by pitch behavior only when that relationship supports it.
Describe the listener before the effect
Adobe's Audition Doppler Shifter guide explains the perceived pitch change of an approaching and receding source and documents controls for a simulated path. This supports separating source motion from a static pitch adjustment. It does not mean every moving object needs an exaggerated cinematic swoosh.
Write where the audience is meant to listen from. If the camera is locked beside the road and a vehicle passes, there is a clear approach and departure. If the shot moves alongside the car at similar speed, the relationship can be very different. Do not infer a physically exact velocity from an AI image whose scale and lens are uncertain.
Map three stages to the approved picture
For a fictional electric delivery cart passing a fixed observer, identify the approach, closest passage and recession in the actual shot. The chosen motor recording must be appropriate to the fictional design; a sports-engine roar is not justified merely because it is easy to recognize.
| Stage | Review question |
|---|---|
| Approach | Does the sound establish the intended relative movement? |
| Closest passage | Does the audible transition correspond to the visual route? |
| Recession | Does the sound move away instead of restarting nearby? |
Keep direction, pitch evolution and level as separate observations. A convincing left-to-right balance can coexist with a badly timed pitch change. Lowering the whole recording by a fixed interval produces a different timbre, not an approach-to-recession sequence.
Compare with restraint and preserve other audio
In a project copy, audition the source, a pan-only candidate and a supported motion-effect candidate at comparable listening levels. This is a proposed test, not a completed Audition measurement. Keep dialogue and room ambience outside the isolated effect so their pitch does not change with the passing cart.
If the source recording already contains a strong pass-by, adding another full motion process can exaggerate or contradict it. Listen to the original first. Likewise, a distant slow object may require very little treatment; do not use a dramatic preset as a physics requirement.
For an Imagild video concept, describe the vehicle path and intended audience viewpoint. Detailed sound design can then be performed with an actual external audio tool. Accept when the sound's apparent movement agrees with the picture and does not unintentionally alter voices or the whole mix. Reject a repair that merely changes channel balance while leaving the intended relative-motion cue unresolved, but retain a simple pan when the scene genuinely needs only direction.
