Audio stems line up reliably when each file represents the same agreed timeline range, including silence before its first event. Exporting only the occupied clips can remove that offset. Ask for dialogue, music, and effects stems with a common start and endpoint, then rebuild a review mix before treating the package as interchangeable with the approved soundtrack.
Distinguish a stem from a folder of source sounds
A dialogue stem is usually a rendered contribution to the edit, not simply every original interview file. Its timing, approved edits, and documented processing matter. A music cue that begins halfway through a film should not silently become a file expected to start at the beginning just because its empty lead-in was trimmed away.
Adobe's Audition export documentation distinguishes a selected time range, an entire session, and selected clips. It also describes separate-track mixdown options and how routing, volume, pan, and effects influence the result. Choose the range and signal scope deliberately. A stem label alone cannot tell a receiving editor what was included.
Write a small delivery contract
Specify the picture revision, common start address, common end, sample rate, channel layout, and filenames. State whether silence at the beginning is intentional. Decide where shared reverberation and other common returns belong so that adding the files together does not include them twice.
Do not promise that every stem sum must exactly reproduce a nonlinear master-processed mix. A limiter responding to the combined soundtrack can behave differently from separate processing on each stem. If exact reconstruction matters, agree a compatible routing and mastering method with the receiving sound editor and deliver the approved full mix as the reference.
A proposed three-stem reconstruction
This is an unexecuted handoff test. Imagine a forty-second film with narration starting at second four, music at the opening, and a latch sound near the end. Export all three stems over the same forty-second picture range, keeping the narration's first four seconds silent. Include any agreed sound tail through the common endpoint.
Open a new empty session and place every stem at the documented start. Set playback gains to the documented values rather than compensating by ear for one wrongly exported file. Compare the first word, latch event, music ending, and total range against the full approved mix. Log any offset, missing return, doubled ambience, or unexpected peak change.
Accept a package another editor can actually use
The package passes when the files occupy the same coordinate system and produce the intended reviewed contributions. Include the full mix, a short routing note, and the exact picture revision. Keep raw recordings separately for future repair; they answer a different need from synchronized stems.
This procedure is for external audio production supporting an Imagild film. It does not claim that the website exports editable stems or a mixing session. Before commissioning a language change, determine whether the available deliverable contains genuinely separable dialogue or only an already flattened viewing soundtrack.
