An Illustrator clipping mask controls what is visible; it does not mean the artwork outside the visible shape has been deleted. If you are handing over an editable file, inspect the clipping set and decide what source material belongs in that delivery. A correct-looking crop alone does not answer that question.
Ask what the receiver needs to edit
A shop may need a finished portrait label only, while a design collaborator may need the full photograph for later reframing. Those are legitimate but different handoffs. Write the editing scope before removing or packaging anything. Preserve your complete master independently so that preparing a limited delivery does not destroy your working source.
Adobe describes a clipping set as the clipping path together with masked objects, and documents releasing it through Object > Clipping Mask > Release. This establishes that the mask is a visibility relationship. It is not evidence that a particular export format removes every hidden object or metadata field. Adobe: Manage clipping-mask objects.
Inspect a duplicate, never the only master
The following is a review plan rather than an executed file examination. Duplicate the document and find the clipping set in Window > Layers. Record whether it contains a full photograph, a larger illustration, extra text or several nested groups. On this inspection copy, release the mask and compare the revealed contents with the visible proof.
If the photograph extends well beyond the label, that is expected evidence of retained source. If other unapproved artwork appears, identify whether it should be included. Reapply the intended crop or close the inspection copy without replacing the approved master. An invisible clipping path after release may simply have no fill or stroke; do not assume it disappeared.
Prepare the agreed delivery
For a finished visual, create the requested flattened or raster delivery copy with deliberate bounds and reopen it. For an editable handoff, create a separate reduced document containing the approved components and the editability the receiver actually needs. Check linked and embedded assets as part of that agreement.
Do not use a black rectangle, a mask or a screenshot as proof that unwanted source content is absent from a native document. When removal has confidentiality significance, the file needs a dedicated review of its actual contents. This article explains clipping behavior, not a universal sanitization procedure.
Record both appearance and contents
Use two acceptance questions: does the delivered visual match the approved crop, and does the editable package contain only the source material agreed for that recipient? Passing one does not imply passing the other. Record the filename, format, intended editing scope and any retained full-size source.
Fail the handoff if the recipient can reveal unintended artwork, or if the reduced copy prevents an explicitly requested adjustment. Imagild may provide the artwork used in the label. Illustrator is responsible for the clipping set and native document inspection; no matching removal or packaging feature is implied in Imagild.
