Photoshop can retain pixels outside a crop when Delete Cropped Pixels is turned off. Reopening the editable document and expanding the crop can therefore reveal content that the current frame hides. That is useful for later album layouts, but it is different from permanently removing the excluded pixels. Read the crop state before assuming the source has been trimmed irreversibly.
Identify what was saved
Distinguish the editable document from a rendered export. The working document can preserve source content that a flat image does not display. A photograph fitting a square preview does not establish that only square source pixels remain inside the master. Inspect the actual crop option and the layer structure.
Adobe's Crop tool options describes Delete Cropped Pixels as the decision between removing excluded areas and retaining them for editing. This is not a universal deletion promise for every embedded Smart Object, metadata item or alternate layer. Do not use one checkbox as evidence that all hidden document contents are gone.
Plan whether reframing is still needed
For an album page, a nondestructive crop can preserve room for a later landscape spread or a different caption position. Keep that master clearly named and store the accepted visible output separately. For a fixed postcard delivery, the recipient may need only the rendered approved frame, while the creator retains the editable source.
Choose the relationship deliberately. Permanent deletion reduces ordinary crop recoverability, so preserve a source copy before selecting it. Retaining pixels preserves flexibility but does not guarantee unlimited recovery: information removed earlier, outside the actual source, or lost through another operation will not reappear simply by expanding the crop.
Compare the crop on a duplicate
This is a reproducible test plan, not an executed recovery. On a duplicate containing ordinary image pixels, set a smaller crop with Delete Cropped Pixels off and commit it. Revisit the crop and expand toward a known source landmark. Record whether that landmark is available, then undo the diagnostic changes.
If you need to understand the deletion route, use a separate duplicate of the original rather than overwrite the flexible master. Compare the relevant crop behavior and save paths. Keep layer types explicit, because an embedded object's internal source may have its own retention behavior. A test result for an ordinary raster layer should not be generalized to every document component.
Acceptance for the intended handoff
The flexible master passes when its current frame is correct and the required source extent remains available for authorized reframing. The flat output passes when it contains only the intended visible composition at the specified dimensions. Reopen both and compare them; their editing possibilities need not be identical.
Keep filenames and a short handoff note clear about which file to edit. Imagild can provide the photo material, while crop retention described here belongs to desktop Photoshop. Expanding an external crop is not AI reconstruction, and it should not be advertised as recovering details that were never captured.
