The fifth physical page in a PDF can legitimately be labeled “1” when earlier pages form a cover or introduction. The viewer's label, the page's position in the file and a number printed on the artwork are separate things. Make a three-column page map before rearranging the document. A navigation-label discrepancy does not automatically mean the page order is wrong.
Make a page map that a reviewer can use
List physical position, viewer label and visible page number for the affected section. Include the cover and introduction. A document with four introductory pages followed by body page 1 has a different mapping from a document missing its first four body pages.
Confirm which system the reviewer used when asking for “page 5.” If the request is ambiguous, identify the page by a heading or a small preview as well. That avoids making a correct edit to the wrong physical page during a long review.
Change the relevant numbering system
Adobe's page-label documentation uses All tools > Organize pages > Page labels in Acrobat. It explicitly distinguishes labels from visible page numbers added through headers and footers. These are external PDF operations, not image-generation settings.
If the desired change is navigation labeling, select the intended physical range and apply the appropriate sequence or prefix on a copy. If the printed numbers are wrong, correct the source layout or the supported visible-number workflow. If actual reading order is wrong, handle that as a page-organization problem. Do not use one action as a substitute for all three.
A hypothetical front-matter test
Imagine a proposal with an unnumbered cover, three introductory pages and eight body pages. Body page 1 is physically fifth. The test map records that relationship and the intended introductory labels. Reopen the exported copy and navigate to a body heading using the expected label.
This is a proposed test, not a verified client document. Check the first body page, the last introduction and a later body page. Record whether the target viewer honors labels or presents only file positions. A label working in one editor does not establish that every online preview has the same navigation.
Approve review navigation and print order separately
Accept when the saved labels follow the document's structure, visible numbers are correct where required and no page has been moved unintentionally. Reject a renumbering that fixes a viewer display while leaving the printed number wrong, or a reordering that disrupts reading merely to make labels look sequential.
Keep the page map with the final PDF and use explicit page references in the delivery note. Verify physical reading order again before any booklet imposition. Imagild's Skills can develop illustrations, while page labels and layout numbering belong to the external document workflow. The goal is for reviewers to find the intended page reliably without confusing navigation metadata with the printed object.
