A PDF layer's screen visibility and print behavior can be separate settings. If a hidden note or alternate design appears in print, inspect that layer's print properties before changing the illustration or blaming transparency. Likewise, a visible layer may be configured not to print. Verify the actual delivery file and the print workflow, rather than approving only a screen preview.
Establish that the content is a PDF layer
Open the PDF in an external application that can inspect optional-content layers. Identify the disputed element and its layer name. If the element is simply part of a flat image or an annotation, layer print settings may not explain it. Record which kind of object contains the content before choosing a fix.
Keep the original export and a working copy. Note whether the screen result changes when that layer is toggled. A design application's layer structure is not automatically the same as the optional layers retained in its PDF export.
Inspect the layer's print property
Adobe's print-layer guide describes layer print choices and print overrides in Acrobat. Its layer-property reference explains the separate controls. Use the actual supported workflow in the external PDF application; these are not controls supplied by Imagild.
Record the current visibility, intended print state and any override used by the print process. Change only the disputed layer on a copy, then repeat the print preview and a representative proof. Do not flatten the entire document reflexively before understanding whether the intended recipient needs optional content.
A hypothetical two-version card proof
Suppose a card PDF contains an approved front design and a hidden alternate slogan. The screen shows the correct slogan, but a print proof includes both. A review table lists the two layer names, visibility, print property and expected proof content. The editor checks the alternate layer rather than redrawing the art.
This is a hypothetical diagnosis and test plan, not a verified repaired PDF. The approved proof must contain exactly the requested version. If the recipient needs only one fixed design, make a separately labeled delivery from the supported source workflow and keep the editable layered master. A fixed file should not be described as retaining the original optional-layer behavior.
Compare every required output state
Accept when the intended screen and print states both match the brief, including any required technical marks. Reject a hidden alternate appearing unexpectedly, a required layer disappearing or an override that changes the wrong content. Check more than one page if different pages carry different layer groups.
Save the reviewed PDF, the proof observation and the layer-state note. Recheck after the supplier changes its print workflow or after a new source export. Imagild's Skills can develop artwork, while optional PDF layers and print-state control belong to the external layout and printing tools. The source picture being correct does not establish that the right combination of PDF content will reach paper.
