Review the dancer's complete movement boundary before making a vertical crop. If the full phrase cannot fit inside that boundary, choose a wider composition within the vertical canvas, adjust framing over time or record a different shot. Keeping the face centered is insufficient when the choreography depends on hands and feet.
Measure the space the phrase uses
Play the whole clip and note the highest hand, lowest body position and widest reach on either side. Mark the beginning, the widest moment and any sideways travel. A crop that fits a neutral stance can fail as soon as the arms extend.
For an illustrative geometry check, a 1920-by-1080 frame cropped to 9:16 at the same height retains roughly 608 pixels of width. That is a narrow slice of the original composition. This calculation describes the rectangle, not a minimum quality rule or a guarantee that the dancer fits.
Use the actual exported dimensions when making your own check.
Choose among four framing strategies
| Strategy | Useful when | Main review |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed vertical crop | The phrase stays within a narrow region | Both hands and feet throughout |
| Moving reframe | The subject travels within the source | Framing does not chase every gesture |
| Fit the full landscape image | Complete motion is more important than filling the canvas | Legibility at phone size |
| Re-record or redesign | The source cannot support the requested crop | New composition preserves the key phrase |
Adobe distinguishes Fill from Fit: Fill can crop mismatched ratios; Fit preserves the image with possible bars. Neither option creates missing source detail.
Do not stretch the person to fill a narrow canvas. It changes the body proportions you are trying to preserve.
Review automatic reframing as an edit
Adobe notes that complex or rapid action may require manual keyframe adjustment. Treat automatic tracking as a starting arrangement, then watch the movement itself.
Follow the wrists and footwear during the widest event. If the frame moves toward one hand and removes the other, reduce the scale or choose a steadier framing path. A slow drift can look more coherent than repeatedly recentering on whichever limb moves fastest.
Check the background too. Reframing may create apparent camera movement in an originally locked shot. Decide whether that change suits the clip rather than accepting it unnoticed.
Approve the delivered vertical file
Export a separate version and play it at the expected phone size. Inspect the top and bottom edges, including raised fingers and a foot extending toward the camera. Leave room for any captions or interface elements required by the actual destination, but do not invent a universal safe-area measurement.
Compare the vertical result with the source at the key movement moments. Keep the source master unchanged. If a crucial limb disappears, revise the framing instead of describing the shorter visible gesture as the complete dance.
Questions about unavoidable empty space
Are bars worse than cutting off a hand?
That depends on the purpose. When the dance phrase is the subject, preserving it can be more useful than filling every pixel. Judge the complete movement at normal viewing size.
Can generative expansion solve the crop?
It can invent surrounding imagery, but it does not verify missing movement. Inspect any generated body or background separately and do not describe invented choreography as preserved source evidence.
