Exporting spreads can combine facing source pages into wide PDF pages. If the recipient requested individual pages, check the export structure before changing the document size or manually cutting the PDF apart. Count source pages, source spreads and resulting PDF pages separately. Their counts need not be identical, and the exact relationship depends on how the document's spreads are arranged.
Identify the structure the recipient requested
Ask whether the recipient wants individual reading-order pages, visual spreads or an imposed printer file. These serve different purposes. A wide visual spread is not automatically an imposed sheet for folding. Likewise, a correctly readable spread may not be the format the production workflow accepts.
Keep the source layout and label its pages by identity. Check whether the cover is a standalone page or whether the test document deliberately pairs every page. Do not assume that any eight-page document necessarily forms four two-page spreads; its actual arrangement must be inspected.
Inspect the export choice
Adobe's InDesign PDF-options guide distinguishes Export As pages or spreads and separate PDF files. The selection controls how source pages become PDF output. These are InDesign operations, not automatic print assembly performed by Imagild.
On a copy, choose the requested structure and range, then reopen the resulting PDF. Check page count and physical page dimensions together. If the output is wide, confirm which source pages appear on each PDF page. Fix the source export choice where possible rather than introducing a second imposition or a destructive cropping process.
A hypothetical paired-page comparison
Imagine a deliberately arranged test layout with eight numbered pages in four pairs. The proposed export comparison produces a pages version and a spreads version. A map records each source-page identity and which PDF page contains it. The expected counts for this specific arrangement differ, while all eight source-page identities should remain accounted for.
This is a planning test, not a verified client book. Include a separate cover arrangement in another check if the real document has one. The acceptance question is the requested output structure, not merely whether a wide preview looks attractive.
Approve the print and review copies deliberately
Accept when the exact PDF uses the requested page structure, correct dimensions and complete content in the intended order. Reject a spreads file sent where individual pages were required, a missing cover or a manually split version that loses bleed and boundary information. Ask the supplier to confirm any imposed-output responsibility.
Save source layout, checked PDF and page map with the delivery note. Review binding-safe composition independently; individual-page export does not prevent a face from crossing a physical gutter. Imagild's Skills can develop page artwork, while page objects, spread export and print structure belong to external layout tools. Reliable delivery states which structure was exported and proves that every approved source page is represented.
