When both an image application and a printer driver apply color conversion, the print can receive unintended additional processing. Choose one supported color-management route and keep the paper, ink and profile matched. Do not compensate by recoloring the photo until you have checked which stage is responsible for conversion.
Record the active settings
Note the application, printer model, paper choice and color-handling settings in both print dialogs. A saved application preset may not control the driver's separate settings. If you changed printers or paper, an old preset can carry an inappropriate profile or automatic enhancement.
Adobe's application-managed printing guidance instructs users to prevent the driver from overriding the chosen profile. Epson documents a driver mode without color adjustment for compatible application-managed workflows. Menu names and available routes vary by device, so consult the specific installed driver's manual.
Choose one deliberate route
For an application-managed route, select the correct printer-and-paper profile where supported and follow the manual's driver settings that avoid a second color adjustment. For a printer-managed route, use the application's corresponding option and the printer's appropriate media settings. Do not mix half of one recipe with half of the other.
This does not mean all processing in the driver disappears. Paper handling, print quality and supported device operations still matter. The aim is a clear conversion responsibility, not a blanket claim that every color-related setting must be disabled.
A hypothetical portrait proof
Imagine a portrait that prints with unusually strong saturation. The application was set to manage color while the driver applied an additional vivid-photo adjustment. The photographer keeps the source unchanged, corrects the agreed settings and prints a small comparison on the same paper.
This is a hypothetical diagnostic test. If the difference remains, inspect profile selection, ink and printer condition before declaring the file wrong. Comparing two proofs on different papers would introduce another variable and weaken the conclusion.
Use a compact reference sheet
Include a representative face, neutral tones and important saturated colors from the photograph. Keep dimensions and viewing light consistent between tests. Label the settings outside the image or in a separate note so the chosen setup can be repeated.
An Imagild artwork file can be used as the source, but the actual color-managed print is an external workflow. A website preview does not establish which printer profile or driver enhancement was used.
Acceptance
Approve a proof from the documented route with appropriate skin, neutrals and detail. Save the source unchanged and record the settings with the delivery version. When a paper or printer changes, review the route again. One correctly assigned conversion stage is a starting condition, not a guarantee of a perfect screen-to-paper match.
